Sheppard will be replaced in the starting lineup by Dwight Lowery, who struggled last season as a rookie. He broke up Tom Brady's final pass Sunday to Joey Galloway to seal New York's 16-9 win over New England. Drew Coleman will likely step in for Strickland in nickel packages.

Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Coach Rex Ryan said the team would re-sign veteran defensive tackle Howard Green to make up for the loss of Jenkins, who was injured while making a tackle in the second quarter of the Jets' 16-13 overtime loss to Buffalo on Sunday. Jenkins, in his second season with New York, is considered a centerpiece of Ryan's aggressive defense, especially against the run.

Jets running back Leon Washington has been placed on season-ending injured reserve after having surgery in which a rod was inserted into his broken right leg. Washington suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula when a Raiders defender rolled up on his leg after a 6-yard run in the first quarter of the Jets' 38-0 win Sunday. He underwent a two-hour operation at Berkeley's Alta Bates Hospital shortly after the injury, and a rod was inserted into the tibia to stabilize the fracture. The team said doctors expect the fibula to heal on its own. The team said it expects Washington to make a full recovery.

The New York Jets have re-signed cornerback-kick returner Justin Miller, acquiring a replacement for the injured Leon Washington on special teams. Miller was a second-round draft pick of the Jets in 2005, and made the 2007 Pro Bowl season after leading the AFC with a 30.1-yard average and two touchdowns on kickoffs. He was waived by the Jets last season and signed with Oakland, which re-signed him for one game before releasing him Nov. 11. Miller has a 26.2 career kickoff return average, and five returns for scores.

Jets LB Vernon Gholston will start Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, a role he'll have when Calvin Pace sits the first four games after violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The New York Jets have signed free agent linebacker Ryan Fowler and waived fullback Jason Davis. Fowler was released by Tennessee on Sunday after two seasons with the Titans. An outstanding special teams player, Fowler has played in 62 games, including 21 starts. He spent his first three seasons with Dallas after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Duke. Davis was claimed off waivers from Chicago on Sunday.
