Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday that wide receiver Danario Alexander didn't participate in an OTA practice because of a sore hamstring. There's no timetable on when he'll return to work. Alexander says he's focused on playing 16 games and welcomes the competition the team has added at receiver. "I'm looking forward to a lot of competition," said the 6-foot-5, 217-pound Alexander. "We're in the heat of the battle and we just have to separate ourselves. It keeps you driving and keeps you motivated. That's part of the NFL. You're always going to have new competition coming in."

The Rams got some much-needed running back talent to stack behind starter Steven Jackson when they took Cincinnati rusher Isaiah Pead in the 2012 NFL Draft. Using exceptional bursts of straightaway speed, he ran well and started 26 of his 44 games, carried 545 times for 3,288 yards (6.03 per carry) and 27 touchdowns and caught 87 passes for 721 yards. If that wasn't enough to convince scouts, he put on a show of footwork at the Senior Bowl, including punt returns of 60 and 38 yards. At the scouting combine he validated his athleticism with a 40-yard time of 4.47 seconds and a vertical jump of 33 inches.

The former Giants and Eagles receiver agreed to a one-year deal with the Rams in March. "He had a Pro Bowl year in 2009," Fisher said. "He was very productive. He’s a first-class young man. He overcame a difficult situation with his knee. We felt like his knee was in great shape. We worked him out, and he has a chance to get back to where he was in 2009." Smith caught 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 starts in 2009 but has 59 catches for 653 yards and four touchdowns in eight starts (18 total games) since.

The St. Louis Rams selected running back Daryl Richardson of Abilene Christian (not Alabama running back Trent Richardson) with their second pick in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Richardson is the brother of former Abilene Christian running back Bernard Scott, who now plays for the Bengals, and former Abilene Christian receiver Clyde Gates, who now plays for the Dolphins. As a senior, Richardson rushed for 867 yards, including a long run of 75 yards. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry and scored 11 touchdowns. Richardson also caught 40 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns. Richardson is also looking forward to learning from Rams RB Steven Jackson. “It's just a blessing to get the opportunity and even just to get to play with Steven Jackson because he is a top performance running back,” Richardson said.

Brockers, a 21-year-old sophomore, had just two sacks in his lone year as a starter but blocked a field goal in the BCS championship game, and the Rams believe he has pass-rush potential going forward. Brockers started all 14 games at left tackle last season, helping the Tigers rank second in the nation in total defense with a 261.5-yards per game average. LSU also was second in the nation at points allowed with just 11 per game. "I know a lot of work has to be done," he said. "But I'm going to put a lot of hard work into this. I'm a professional now."
