Redskins expected to sign tight end Chris Cooley

The Redskins are in talks to re-sign tight end Chris Cooley, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, and a deal is expected shortly

Cooley, who spent his entire career with the Redskins prior to being released in the preseason, is wildly popular with fans and teammates and is in the process of rejoining the team. Washington lost tight end Fred Davis, who was playing on the franchise tag, for the season with an Achilles tear in Sunday's loss to New York.

Cooley knows the offense and has been featured at times as a pass catcher and a blocker in Washington.

He had remained in occasional contact with team officials since his release, which was at least in part due to the $3.5 million he was set to earn. It's likely that this deal, when finalized, would be for one year and considerably less money. Cooley has remained in the Washington area, working out and hoping to resume his career, ideally with the Redskins.
