Cardinals to interview Bengals assistant Jay Gruden for top job

The Arizona Cardinals will interview Bengals OC Jay Gruden for their head coaching vacancy, according to a league source.

The Eagles and Cardinals intend to interview Gruden this week, according to a league source. Gruden's team was eliminated from the playoffs Saturday and he is now free to speak to other teams about head coaching opportunities.

Last year, Gruden declined to take head coaching interviews but will be doing so this season and could emerge as a candidate in San Diego and Jacksonville, as well, pending developments with both clubs.

Gruden has reached the playoffs with young quarterback Andy Dalton during each of Dalton's two seasons. Gruden previously worked in the NFL under his brother, Jon, in Tampa and also was a successful head coach in the Arena League.

The Cardinals had serious interest in Penn State coach Bill O'Brien, who is staying at the school. They have interviewed their defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, as well as Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, and were granted permission to interview Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Haley formerly served in that role in Arizona and has a strong relationship with Cardinals assistant GM Steve Keim, who is expected to be elevated to the GM position.
