Cardinals place second-round tender on quarterback Hoyer

Cardinals placed a second-round tender on quarterback Brian Hoyer, according to a league source.

Hoyer was expected to generate interest in a weak quarterback market and the Cardinals, short on passers themselves, wanted to protect their asset. Another team could potentially put an offer sheet together but it is far less likely with him carrying this tender in excess of $2 million and the second-round compensation.

The Cardinals had yet to address their situation with starter Kevin Kolb, who is set to make $11 million this season, but were expected to seek a paycut from him. Arizona is one of several teams picking high in the first round that is intrigued by West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith as well.
