NFL trying to work with union to change offseason schedule

The NFL is continuing its exploratory discussions with the NFLPA regarding altering the offseason schedule, and pushing back the combine until March, free agency into April and the draft into May.

However. the changes to free agency remain a significant hurdle, according to numerous sources with knowledge of the situation, and the union remains very opposed to the idea. Players do not want to have to wait from early January -- when they receive their final regular-season checks -- until sometime in April in order to receive signing bonuses and new money from free agency. It will require major concessions from the league to get this calendar negotiated, sources said.

However, the NFL already has the jurisdiction to unilaterally change the dates for the combine, as well as the draft, without it being subject to any NFLPA approval.
