Kolb's Bills deal guarantees only $1M; more like a backup's contract

The deal newly acquired quarterback Kevin Kolb has with the Buffalo Bills guarantees him $1 million and could be worth less than $3 million for this season.

The deal will in no way preclude the Bills from drafting or obtaining other passers, and it doesn't ensure he will be on the team beyond 2013 (even cutting him before the season would cost only the $1 million signing bonus, which is all that is fully guaranteed), according to the contract.

Some early details of the deal reported it as worth $13 million. However, at its base value, the pact is far from that, and Kolb would have to hit many escalators to achieve that total. This contract is much more of a kicking-the-tires on a backup deal.

Besides the $1 million signing bonus, Kolb has a 2013 base salary of $1.65 million, and he can make $250,000 in roster bonus and $100,000 in workout bonuses. If he is on the roster all year, it's a one-year, $3 million deal.

In 2014, Kolb has a $2 million base, which is not guaranteed, and a $1 million roster bonus and $100,000 in workout bonuses. He also has escalators that, if achieved, would drive the value up significantly, but that's a big if at this point.
