Bonuses help sweeten Winfield's deal with Seahawks

The Seahawks were one of several teams pursuing veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield and ultimately landed him last week. The deal has a base value of $1.5 million, and he can earn another $500,000 by playing in every game.

The Vikings, who let Winfield go due to his high contract and then tried badly to get him to return as a free agent, were offering $3 million per year, sources said. However, the deal Winfield signed in Seattle also includes $1 million in "not likely to be earned bonuses" that are actually attainable, according to a source.

If Winfield intercepts four passes and plays in a certain percent of his team's snaps he can end up making $3 million total in Seattle (the playing time thresholds begin at 55 percent and move up from there). Winfield had three picks last season in Minnesota and has averaged about 90 percent playing time.

The presence of Seattle's top corner duo on the outside means Winfield will have chances to make plenty of plays on balls as a slot corner and by structuring the deal with not likely to be earned bonuses, it saves Seattle cap space.
