The San Diego Chargers are closing in on signing veteran pass rusher Dwight Freeney, according to a league source.

Freeney, one of the game's dominant sack masters during his 11-season stint in Indianapolis, has been on the market for months, making a series of visits to teams. Most recently -- on Wednesday and Thursday -- Freeney met with the Chargers.

Freeney was linked with the Patriots and Broncos early in free agency, but teams were not willing to pay what he wanted, and thus he and other veteran linemen like John Abraham and Richard Seymour continued to sit unsigned.

San Diego developed a more acute need for an edge rusher when its second-year man, Melvin Ingram, was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee this week in OTAs. San Diego also lost Shaun Phillips in free agency, but this week added former Panthers linebacker Thomas Keiser on a one-year contract.

Freeney struggled last season and there is some concern about how much he has left, but even if he contributes only situationally, he fills a need for the Chargers. The gamble is well worth it for rookie general manager Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy.
