The NFL announced this week longtime NFL executive Ray Anderson, who held the powerful position of VP of Football Operations, is stepping down after the Super Bowl. The move had been in the works for quite some time, league sources said, with Anderson approached about team president positions by several teams in the past 18 months -- including Raiders owner Mark Davis.

Anderson, who has strong ties to the Bay Area, remains on the Raiders radar, sources said, with Davis still mulling possible restructurings at the top of the franchise. Anderson could fill many of the duties that longtime exec Amy Trask did prior to her resignation in the spring. Anderson has a unique blend of experience as a team exec (with the Falcons), and high-ranking NFL official. He also was a player agent, so has seen the game from the NFLPA's perspective as well.

Anderson has been a strong proponent of protégé Merton Hanks within the football operations department, with Hanks taking a more prominent role this season in handing out player discipline, including writing letters and explanations for the league's decision to suspend players for on-field infractions. While the league is conducting an outside search as well to replace Anderson, Hanks, a former standout NFL cornerback, is considered a top internal candidate.
