Lions lead league in spending; Panthers tops in cost per victory

For more news and notes from Jason La Canfora, tune into The NFL Today Sunday at noon ET on CBS.

The NFC North was the highest-spending division in the NFL this season, according to payroll figures compiled by the NFL Players Association. The Lions spent $162 million, and the Packers $160 million, with each team spending nearly $40 million over the $124-million salary cap. Carolina has been the biggest bargain in the league this season, with only three teams spending less in actual money on payroll than the Panthers' $98 million, and the Panthers averaging an NFL-best $9.8-million per victory, far and away best in the NFL (Seattle is second at $10.9M per win).

Mind you, payroll will include money tied to players no longer on the team.

The Texans, meantime, are by far the NFL's least-efficient team, spending a whopping $54 million per win, with the next closest team Atlanta at $34 million per win.

The following table displays the 32 teams, in terms of highest spending to lowest spending (keep in mind that salary cap penalties prevented the Redskins and Cowboys from spending as they may have otherwise):
