What the Seahawks face in trading Tarvaris Jackson

The Seahawks trade gave Tarvaris Jackson a $1.5 million signing bonus and a $500,000 roster bonus last year. They got a year of starts out of him, but the experiment is over.

Jackson has only 2012 left on his contract, but it is at $4 million. I can't believe any team would give up anything more than a conditional seventh-round pick for him. The conditions would be that he started a few games in 2012.

If Jackson made the team and came off the bench to start three games he would be worth the $4 million. If he was cut or never left the bench he wouldn't be worth the salary or the compensation.

He's a 29-year-old QB with 34 starts, and would only be a fit as a backup for a team that loses their backup in the next two weeks. Keep this in mind: 14 teams kept only two quarterbacks last year to start the season and none of them would be thinking about Jackson if they go with two again this year.

He probably gets released a week from now and the Seahawks gain $3.25 million in cap space. However, it should be noted that in 2011 he did have a 319-yard, three-TD day against Atlanta as well as a 323-yard day against Cincinnati.

Someone in the NFL is looking at those game tapes this weekend.

Pat Kirwan has been around the league since 1972, serving in a variety of roles. He was a scout for the Cardinals and Buccaneers, a coach for the Jets as well as the team's Director of Player Administration where he negotiated contracts and managed the team's salary cap. He is the author of Take Your Eye Off the Ball: How to Watch Football by Knowing Where to Look, and the host of Sirius NFL Radio's Moving the Chains.
