Remembering time spent with Art Modell

I ran into Art Modell at the Ravens training camp on Aug. 7, and spent some time with him in the team cafeteria talking about his beloved Baltimore team and the days when I was at the Jets.

I had the privilege of having dinner with him and his wife on two occasions. My owner with the Jets, Leon Hess, was Art's good friend and every year at the owners meetings they would go out for dinner and I was lucky enough to be invited.

Modell would have Mr. Hess and the rest of the dinner party in stitches with his sense of humor. It was great to see him one last time before his passing -- and reminiscing about those dinners with Mr. Hess brought a big smile to his face.

He certainly had his enemies in Cleveland for leaving town and that memory will stay with Browns fans forever. But there was another side to Art Modell and I got a chance to see it up close and personal. Rest in peace Art.
