NFL Week 1 Grades: Kelly, Eagles offense deliver on promise

TeamGradeAnalysis
Texans 31, Chargers 28
BIt didn't look good early, but they kept battlng. The big pick-six by Brian Cushing was huge. That's a heck of a 24-point comeback on the road.
B-They got off to a great start and looked to be cruising. They have to be hurting after blowing that big lead. The offense went dead in the second half.
Eagles 33, Redskins 27
B+ The offense was as dynamic as expected from Chip Kelly in his first game. LeSean McCoy had a huge night. The defense had a good first half.
CThey didn't seem to adjust well to the Eagles' offensive tempo. Robert Griffin III took a half to get going. It added up to a big deficit, too big to overcome.

Sunday

TeamGradeAnalysis
Cowboys 36, Giants 31
D When you turn the ball over six times on the road, two for touchdowns, you won't win many games. The Giants gave this game away. At least they battled back to make it interesting.
B+The Cowboys better learn to put teams away. They blew a big lead. The turnovers keyed this one. Jason Witten came up big with two touchdown catches.
49ers 34, Packers 28
C+The run defense was better. But the pass defense was terrible. What happened? Aaron Rodgers did some good things and the Packers had a fourth-quarter lead, but it wasn't enough.
B+Colin Kaepernick showed he can throw it around when he doesn't run it. That's huge. He had a big day. Anquan Boldin was special. The defense had some rough moments.
Rams 27, Cardinals 24
C+Carson Palmer had a nice day throwing the football in his first Cardinals start. But the defense had a tough go of it. They gave up too many yards.
BSam Bradford had a solid day throwing it and the defense had four sacks. Robert Quinn was everywhere. That was a nice fourth-quarter comeback.
Titans 16, Steelers 9
AThe defense had a heck of a game agaisnt Ben Roethlisberger, sacking him five times and limiting the Steelers to 32 yards rushing. The offense didn't do much, but didn't need to do so.
C-The offense was horrible. The worst news was losing Maurkice Pouncey for the year. The defense actually played a solid game.
Patriots 23, Bills 21
C+It wasn't pretty, but they found a way. The offense didn't look that good, but had a drive to win it in the end. Stevan Ridley's fumble for a score was a huge momentum swing.
C-They made it interesting, but they couldn't hold on late. Even so, they have to be enouraged. EJ Manuel did some good things.
Saints 23, Falcons 17
C+They jumped to a 10-0 lead but seemed to hit a lull. The defense, which was a concern heading into the season, remains so. They struggled to stop the Saints.
B-The defense looked much better than it did a year ago and had the late stop. Drew Brees showed he's the same guy, now only better with Sean Payton back.
Chiefs 28, Jaguars 2
AYes, it was the Jaguars they beat up, but it was on the road. The defense was impresssive. Alex Smith had a nice game to go with it.
FThe offense was horrible. Blaine Gabbert looked lost. The offensive line was terrible as well. They have a long way to go.
Seahawks 12 Panthers 7
BCredit this one to the defense. They limited Cam Newton to 128 yards passing, which is impressive. After a slow start, Russell Wilson got it going and finished with 320 yards.
C-The offense couldn't get much of anything going. The defense had trouble in pass coverage. That was not a good start.
Bears 24, Bengals 21
B-They will look at this one as a game they gave away with turnovers. A.J. Green had a big day, but the defense couldn't stop the Brandon Marshall.
B+They used turnovers to win this one. The defense gave up some big numbers, but they made some key stops. Jay Cutler to Marshall was the big combination.
Dolphins 23, Browns 10
BThe defense came up big with the turnovers, and Ryan Tannehill had a nice game on the road. That's a solid road vicotry.
C-Brandon Weeden can't throw three picks and have his team win a game. The defense had trouble in the passing game. At least Joe Haden did a nice job.
Lions 34, Vikings 24
CThe defense was shredded by the Lions offense. Christian Ponder's three picks didn't help the offense. They looked good early but faded.
B+Matt Stafford had a heck of a game and Reggie Bush came up with a big game behind him. The offense was impressive. The defense did a nice job after Adrian Peterson's long run.
Colts 21, Raiders 17
CGive them a lot of credit for competing in this one. Terrelle Pryor did some good things. That has to give them some hope.
CThis wasn't an impressive performance. But much like they did last year, they found a way to pull it out. They still don't protect Andrew Luck well enough.
Jets 18, Bucs 17
C+Finding a way to win for this team is huge -- even with a litle help from the Bucs. Geno Smith had a nice first start. It's his job now.
C-That was a horrible way to lose a game, but they floundered for much of this game anyway. At least the pass rush showed up. Lavonte David had a heck of a day, except for the late hit.

Thursday

TeamGradeAnalysis
Broncos 49, Ravens 27
A+When your quarterback throws seven touchdown passes like Peyton Manning did, it has to be an A+. They blew out the defending champions in grand style. After a slow start, the defense played better with a lead. Von Miller wasn't even needed.
DThey showed a lot of flaws in getting blown out. But it was just one game. Joe Flacco did some good things at times, but also had some rough patches. Losing Jacoby Jones hurt. The defense was horrible.
