Stanley Cup Playoff Haikus before great series

By Brian Stubits | Hockey writer

First-round playoff schedules, TV information.

Finally, the playoffs are here, set to get under way this coming week.

With the pairings all set and some awesome matchups across the board, I figured what better way to celebrate it all with some Haiku?

As to my Haiku writing abilities, just please kindly remember the following. I haven't written Haiku since I was in grade school and I read too much Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein as a kid to the point that I can't get it through my thick skull that poetry doesn't have to rhyme.

East

(1) Rangers vs. (8) Senators

The Blueshirts are back,
Some say Ottawa can't hack,
The King shall reign on.

In other words, I like the Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist is good.

(2) Bruins vs. (7) Capitals

The champs begin their quest,
To prove that they're still the best,
Caps are one tough test.

Basically, this should be a good series.

(3) Panthers vs. (6) Devils

Devils back for more,
DeBoer looks to settle score,
Believe red is dead.

I think that one is pretty clear.

(4) Penguins vs. (5) Flyers

There is no love lost,
The winner will pay the cost,
Keystone clash will own.

Translation: Make a pick at your own peril in this awesome matchup.

West

(1) Canucks vs. (8) Kings

Canucks still on up,
Obscene with healthy Sedin,
Quick could steal the deal.

How about I put it this way: The Canucks are my favorite to open the West but the Kings are one scary eight seed.

(2) Blues vs. (7) Sharks

Blues defense is tough,
But able to score enough?
Reading Sharks is rough.

Still not sure I believe in the Blues and the Sharks are impossible to get a grasp on, especially with their playoff past.

(3) Coyotes vs. (6) Blackhawks

Desert Dogs surprise,
Blackhawks have the better guys,
Taking 'Hawks is wise.

I will take the risk of going against the team that continues to defy expectations, the Coyotes.

(4) Predators vs. (5) Red Wings

Preds and Wings will thrill,
Series starting in Smashville,
Gives edge over skill.

That home-ice advantage was massive in this series. Nashville got it.
