Training camp tracker: Thursday, Jan. 17
The NHL is back open for business.
Training camps opened up on Sunday and that also meant that GMs were once again free to do what they do, which is sign and trade players. Training camps won't last long at all so the player movement should happen faster than normal. Keep up with Thursday's tidbits here.
| 4:51 p.m. | ||
![]() | Veteran defenseman Tom Poti wasn't with the Capitals when training camp began, sent to AHL Hershey for a conditioning assignment after sitting out all lof last season. That stint is done and Poti is back with the Caps.
| 4:49 p.m. | ||
![]() | Just in time for the end of training camp, the Panthers re-signed RFA defenseman Dmitry Kulikov two a two-year contract. He will likely take one of spots on the second defensive pairing for Florida.
| 4:46 p.m. | ||
![]() | Adding to the already insane list of rookies that will be in the NHL this season, the Wild's top pick in last summer's draft, defenseman Matt Dumba, will be sticking with the team out of training camp. Remember: this season rookies can play five games before their contract starts to roll.
| 4:42 p.m. | ||
![]() | The Calgary Flames brought in Brad Winchester to camp for a professional tryout, but are not going to bring the NHL vet on. They announced, among other moves, that he has been released from his PTO.
| 3:22 p.m. | ||
![]() | There has been some doubts as to when Kings forward Anze Kopitar could start playing after suffering a knee injury overseas and while it's looking better right now, he might miss the first game or two. Sure beats the alternatives of being out a few weeks.
| 2:45 p.m. | ||
![]() | The Minnesota Wild are getting what feels like another addition to the team as they have activated forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who has had concussion troubles, off of injured reserve.
| 2:23 p.m. | ||
![]() | The Oilers are expected to go this season with the goaltending tandem once again of Nikolai Khabibulin and Devan Dubnyk, but they recalled Yann Danis on Thursday, likely meaning Khabibulin isn't ready to go yet.
| 1:30 p.m. | ||
![]() | Most teams are announcing the moves of top prospects back to their junior or AHL teams as the roster deadline approaches, but the Lightning aren't sending them all back. Guy Boucher announced that Cory Conacher as well as Pierre-Cedric Labrie are sticking with the team. Conacher had 39 goals, 41 assists in 75 AHL games last season.
| 1:26 p.m. | ||
![]() | Moves continue to be made across the NHL as teams cut players to reach the roster limit of 23 by Friday's deadline. For the Islanders that means top prospects Ryan Strome and Griffin Reinhart are returning to their junior clubs.
| 1:20 p.m. | ||
![]() | The Ottawa Senators now have three goalies who they feel can all play at the NHL level, so coach Doug MacLean isn't gong to make any decisions on it yet. The Senators will travel to Winnipeg with three goalies on the roster -- Craig Anderson, Robin Lehner and Ben Bishop -- and MacLean will decide then who starts.
| 12:08 p.m. | ||
![]() | Teams have begun sending players through the waiver wire in an attempt to send them down and reach the 23-man roster limit by Friday's deadline. The Maple Leafs did that with veteran defenseman Keith Aucoin, who was gobbled up by the Islanders. It's the second defenseman the Isles have grabbed on waivers this week.
| 10:15 a.m. | ||
![]() | The Flyers made a move on Wednesday night, sending Tye McGinn back to AHL Adirondack. According to Sam Carchidi, that means it looks like center Scott Laughton, the Flyers' first pick in last summer's draft, will make the team. It worked out pretty well with Sean Couturier last year.
| 10:11 a.m. | ||
![]() | How are the contract talks going between the Dallas Stars and restricted free agent Jamie Benn? Not all that well yet. Trying to find the right money level on a new deal is tough when there are so many comparables out there, Mike Heika writes, and many of them don't look too good for the Stars.
| 10:07 a.m. | ||
![]() | Chris Kreider is fighting to make the Rangers roster out of camp after playing with the team in the playoffs a year ago. He seemed to impress a lot of people with his play in those games, scoring five goals in 18 games. John Tortorella wasn't blown away by Kreider, though. "He's a kid that came in and played some really good games and then was God awful in some games during the playoffs. And that's what you expect out of a kid."
| 9:37 a.m. | ||
![]() | The Panthers cut down the size of their training camp roster on Wednesday, sending five players to AHL San Antonio. That includes top goaltending prospect Jacob Markstrom as well as forwards Quinton Howden, Jon Rheault and Drew Shore plus defenseman Colby Robak.
| 9:20 a.m. | ||
![]() | One of the amazing parts of the few days of training camps we've seen is the overwhelming response from fans to come watch practices and/or scrimmages. Perhaps no turnout was as big as what the Penguins had on Wednesday night, with lines outside the Consol Energy Center stretching around the block.
| 9:15 a.m. | ||
![]() | The Bruins played an exhibition game in camp against their AHL affiliates, the Providence Bruins, and lost, 7-5. But that didn't have Milan Lucic down, he was glad they were able to face a team that could challenge them and show what needs to be done. Is he spinning it or are the Bruins not in shape yet to be competitive? We'll find out very soon.
| 9:11 a.m. | ||
![]() | There don't appear to be many things to look forward to when watching the Blue Jackets this season but one of them is watching Cam Atkinson, who many believe is primed for a big season. It might not begin quite on time though as he is questionable for the opener with a lower-body issue.
| 9:06 a.m. | ||
![]() | It's a pleasure for anybody to get to play on a line with the Sedin twins in Vancouver and it looks like Jannik Hansen might get that honor ... on the power play, at least. Hansen, who is usually playing on the third line, is spending practice on the power-play unit with the Sedins, Alex Edler and Jason Garrison.
