Red Wings C Darren Helm done for playoffs after tendons severed in forearm

By Brian Stubits | CBSSports.com

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Thursday that center Darren Helm had successful surgery on his lacerated tendons on his forearm. That was the good news. The bad news is that he's done for the remainder of the playoffs.

In the opening period of Detroit's Game 1 loss to the Predators, Helm came in and leveled Alexander Radulov along the boards. Excellent, clean hit. But the problem came on the follow through when Radulov, who was knocked off his feet so bad that his skate came up and caught Helm on the forearm.

It took Helm about a second to realize something might have been wrong, he looked down at his arm and then threw his glove on the ice and went sprinting toward the bench. He didn't return in the game, obviously.

Talk about a blow to the Wings. Helm had just worked his way back into the lineup, missing the close of the regular season with a knee injury. Wednesday was his first game back and then he gets caught up in a fluke situation like this.

"It's a tough blow for us," Wings coach Mike Babcock said after the game.

Helm is one of Detroit's best penalty killers and is a solid third-line centerman. Filling his hole is tougher than you might think.
