Andrew Shaw suspended 3 games for hit on Mike Smith

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer
We don't know whether or not Mike Smith will play for the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 3, but we do know that Andrew Shaw, the player that ran into him on Saturday night, will not be in uniform for the Blackhawks.

Or for the two games after that.

The NHL announced on Tuesday afternoon that Shaw has been suspended three games for the collision that took place early in the secod period of Saturday's game behind the Phoenix net as Smith attempted to play a puck. Goalies are not fair game when they leave their crease, and skaters must make a reasonable effort to avoid contact. In the eyes of the NHL, this did not happen.

Here is Brendan Shanahan's full explanation.

Three games is probably a bit more than we expected. Maybe Shanahan was simply tired of everybody criticizing him for helping to lose all control on the ice over the past week for not suspending Shea Weber. Or maybe that's just the number that randomly came up.

Surprisingly, Smith was able to remain in the game following the hit but he is listed as being a game-time decision for Game 3.
