Much like the Rangers did regarding the three-game suspension to Carl Hagelin, the Capitals released a statement on Wednesday morning addressing the suspension. THe gist of it is that they disapprove of the call. Don't act too surprised.
Here it is.
We disagree with the NHL's decision to suspend Nicklas Backstrom. This has been a competitive and physical series, and we do not understand why a suspension was imposed in this case while other incidents in this series have not been reviewed. Our singular focus now is on Game 4, and we look forward to the energy that our great fans provide.
I'll say this, yes they might have a point regarding other stuff in this series not being called. But it appears they don't actually disagree with the suspension, just that nobody else is getting suspended along with Backstrom.
For his part, Backstrom admitted to it being a dumb move and apologizing after the team's practice.
It might have taken this series a couple games more than most of the others, but the intensity really picked up in Game 3 and it's going to be interesting to see where things go from here. We all know that the Bruins are as tough as a hockey teams comes in the NHL today.
