After winning Presidents' Trophy, Vancouver goes down in first round

The Vancouver Canucks joined an exclusive club on Sunday night, and it's not one they wanted membership in.

With their 2-1 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings, the Canucks were eliminated in five games and became just the sixth team to win the Presidents' Trophy (awarded to the team with the best regular season record every year since 1985) and lose in the first round of the playoffs.

The others:
  1. 1990-91 Chicago Blackhawks lost in six games to Minnesota
  2. 1999-00 St. Louis Blues lost in seven games to San Jose
  3. 2005-06 Detroit Red Wings lost in six games to Edmonton
  4. 2008-09 San Jose Sharks lost in six games to Anaheim
  5. 2009-10 Washington Capitals lost in seven games to Montreal
  6. 2011-12 Vancouver Canucks lost in five games to Los Angeles
As you can see, the Canucks are the only team in that group that failed to win at least two games in the first round. Also, this has happened a bit more frequently since the lockout with four of the six teams coming in the past seven seasons.

It only happened twice in the 19 years prior to that. Is that a sign of increased parity across the league? Or is it simply a fluke run?

What's not a fluke is the play of the Kings. They came into the playoffs as a dangerous team, even as a No. 8 seed, and after going through the top seed and Stanley Cup favorite in just five games they have the look of a team that has a chance to go on quite a run.

Jonathan Quick is playing sensational hockey in net and they control the puck as well as any other team in the league.

Now that they've moved on to the second round we know that their second round opponent will be the St. Louis Blues. Early prediction: Don't expect many goals in that series.
