Video: Johan Franzen suffers broke nose at World Championships

During the third period of Sweden's 7-3 loss to Russia at the World Championships on Friday, Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was on the receiving end of a cross-check to the face delivered by Dmitry Kalinin.

Franzen suffered a broken nose as a result of the hit, and as you can see from the video below, there was an awful lot of blood pouring out from his face.

Kalinin was given a match penalty, which also carries an automatic one-game suspension, and then the IIHF decided the incident was worth an additional two games. Kalinin will not be eligible to play in the remaining games of the round-robin portion of the tournament for Russia, and will also be out for its first playoff game.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press spoke to Red Wings general manager Ken Holland regarding Franzen's status.
"I just talked to Mule," Holland told the Free Press. "He has a broken nose, but otherwise (is) OK."

Asked whether a concussion had been ruled out, Holland replied that Franzen, "sounded good. Never really sure till the morning after."
It is worth pointing out that Franzen does have a history of concussions.

This all happened after Franzen was speared by defenseman Alexei Yemelin following a goal by his Red Wings teammate, Henrik Zetterberg, earlier in the game (video here).

The IIHF announced that Yemelin has also been suspended one game.
