Capitals prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov signs two-year deal to remain in KHL

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer
CapitalsIt's been an interesting day for the Washington Capitals organization.

First, they sent veteran goaltender Tomas Vokoun (well, his free agent rights) to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2012 seventh-round draft pick, getting something in return for a player they knew they were going to lose for nothing.

Then they learned that their top prospect, Evgeny Kuznetsov, has made it official and signed a two-year deal with Traktor Chelyabinsk to remain in the KHL.

Neither story (Vokoun or Kuznetsov) should be much of a surprise to Capitals fans, as it was expected long ago that Kuznetsov wasn't going to come over to the NHL at this point. It's still probably a disappointment given the talent and potential that he would bring to the table.

In 49 games with Traktor Chelyabinsk this past season Kuznetsov scored 19 goals (second on the team) to go with 21 assists. He was the team's leading scorer in total points for the second year in a row.

Kuznetsov was Washington's first-round pick (26th overall) during the 2010 draft. He's spent the past three years playing professionally in the KHL.
