David Jones signs 4-year contract extension with Avalanche

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer
DavidJonesYou can scratch another name off the free agent list for this summer. The Colorado Avalanche announced on Thursday that they have agreed to a four-year contract extension with forward David Jones.

Jones was eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1, and while he wasn't going to be the most attractive player on the market, he certainly would have generated quite a bit of interest.

The team did not release the financial terms of the deal, but it's reportedly worth $4 million per season according to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post. That is a nice raise from the $2.5 million he made during the 2011-12 season.

“David has been one of our top offensive players over the past two seasons,” said Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman in a team statement. “He is a product of our organization who has developed into a proven goal scorer. We are pleased to have him under contract as he enters the prime of his career."

A ninth-round pick by the Avalanche back in 2003, Jones scored 20 goals to go with 17 assists this past season, totals that represented a slight decline from his best season-long performance of his career the previous year when he scored 27 goals.

The $4 million per year cap hit seems a bit steep, but the Avalanche currently only have 11 players signed for the 2012-13 season and are still about $41 million below the projected salary cap of $70 million. They only have seven players signed through 2013-14.

As for this offseason the Avalanche still have a host of restricted free agents that need new contracts, including Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, Steve Downie, Jamie McGinn, Peter Mueller, Ryan Wilson and Erik Johnson
