Steve Bernier ejected for boarding Rob Scuderi

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer
Entering Monday night the Stanley Cup Final had been a relatively clean series with little controversy (outside of a mix up between the two PR teams regarding the delivery of game stats).

That changed midway through the first period of Game 6 when New Jersey Devils forward Steve Bernier was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for hitting Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi into the boards from behind.

Here is the play...

Scuderi remained on the ice and suffered a rather large cut on his nose, covering the ice with blood.

Because it was a five-minute major the Kings could score as many power play goals as they could in the five minutes. They went on to score three: one from captain Dustin Brown, one from Jeff Carter, and one from Trevor Lewis.

That equaled their total number of power play goals in the series heading into Monday's game.

Just before Scuderi was hit by Bernier, Kings forward Jarrett Stoll hit Stephen Gionta from behind between the benches with no penalty called on the play. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as Bernier's hit, but had a penalty been called it would have likely resulted in the Bernier hit never happening.
