Brian Stubits' 2012 NHL Mock Draft: Top 10

By Brian Stubits |

No one really knows what's going to happen with trades, teams picking based on need instead of best player available and just general nonsense that happens at the NHL Draft.

But here's my best guess for the first 10 picks.

View's Top 30 prospects here as determined by the Eye on Hockey staff.

Brian Stubits' 2012 NHL Mock Draft
1Edmonton OilersNail Yakupov
At this point I see Edmonton holding onto the pick and I don't think they can pass on Yakupov, the clear top prospect.
2Columbus Blue JacketsAlex Galchenyuk
With the departure of Rick Nash imminent, the Jackets need a scoring prospect and if Yakupov isn't theirs then onto his Sarnia teammate.
3Montreal CanadiensFilip Forsberg
If there is a team that does something as far as moving I have the Habs as the darkhorse. I think they pass on the question marks around Grigorenko.
4New York IslandersRyan Murray
This might be the guy the Oilers actually wanted to take but the Isles will have no problems with him still being there. Isles could always use more D.
5Toronto Maple LeafsMikhail Grigorenko
There is a lot of potential in Grigorenko but he has his question marks too. Brian Burke isn't the type to back away from questionable talents.
6Anaheim DucksJacob Trouba
With this draft not looking to be terribly deep in top forwards, Anaheim goes defense and grabs another American who adds some grit alongside Cam Fowler.
7Minnesota WildTeuvo Teravainen
The Wild passing on a gifted Finn with their first pick? Ha! They could use point producers in Minnesota, so Teravainen fits all around.
8Carolina HurricanesRadek Faksa
I think the 'Canes are going to be looking up the middle and Faksa is definitely a big, bruising center down the line.
9Winnipeg JetsMathew Dumba
Last year showed the Jets can go anywhere. Might they be the surprise team to pick a goalie? I don't think so and instead go defense with Dumba.
10Tampa Bay LightningMorgan Rielly
Is there any doubt where the Bolts go? It won't be offense, that's for sure (right?). I think they too pass on a goalie and go after fixing another weakness.
