NHL Rumors: Jonathan Toews wants Shane Doan on the Blackhawks

An unusual thing is happening this summer: Shane Doan is heading for free agency.

The veteran has been with the same organization since coming into the NHL, serving as captain for the Coyotes the past eight seasons, but now with him at least entertaining other offers from around the league, there is another captain that would like Doan by his side.

I doubt Toews is the only one at this right now, too.

The fit with the Blackhawks is an interesting one, if not a good one. Of course it was Doan's Coyotes who eliminated the Blackhawks in the playoffs this year, a series that was marred by an awfully ugly incident with Raffi Torres and Marian Hossa. Not that that was any fault of Doan's, but seeing as he is the captain and all, I'm sure there was plenty of jawing back and forth after the hit.

Moreover, Doan's play and production would be a nice addition. While the 'Hawks do have a nice collection of right wingers, they could always look to transition some guys to other spots. For example, they have already tried Patrick Kane at center.

It also shows a strong level of confidence and maturity in Toews, I think. Doan is a well-known captain in the league, he has a stellar reputation for being a hard-working guy who is good to have in the dressing room. The proof is in the fact that he won the Mark Messier Leadership Award earlier this month. It would figure that Doan's arrival would benefit Toews the most on an individual level as somebody he could learn from.

Having Toews lobby for the team is probably a pretty good sales pitch if you're Doan. At this point, all the cards on the table for Doan.

What I'm really curious to know, though, is if Toews has thought about giving up his No. 19 to Doan as extra incentive? These are the important questions to consider.
