Predators re-sign Sergei Kostitsyn

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer

The Nashville Predators still haven't decided what they're going to do with the Shea Weber offer sheet, but they did manage to come to terms on Monday with another of their restricted free agents by signing forward Sergei Kostitsyn to a two-year contract.

By agreeing to terms the two sides were able to avoid salary arbitration, and the deal is worth an average annual salary of $3 million per season.

That is a $500,000 raise from the cap hit on his previous deal, which paid him $2.5 million this past season.

After beginning his career with the Montreal Canadiens, Kostitsyn has spent the past two years in Nashville and is coming off a 2011-12 season that saw him score 17 goals in 75 games. Two years ago, his first season with Nashville, he led the team in goals with what is still a career-high of 23.

He has plenty of skill but can at times be a frustrating player to watch for Predators fans due to what seems to be a constant desire to pass up quality shot opportunities so he can make a drop pass to a teammate that doesn't have as clean of a look. If he would just take a few more of those opportunities when he has them he might see his overall shooting percentage drop (it's been one of the highest in the league over the past two years) but he would probably see an increase in his overall goal-scoring production.

The Predators acquired his brother, Andrei Kostitsyn, from the Canadiens just prior to last year's trade deadline and he remains unsigned as an unrestricted free agent.
