Four of Detroit's 'Russian Five' will participate in Winter Classic alumni celebration

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer

Well this is a pretty awesome piece of Winter Classic news.

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Thursday that four members of their famous Russian Five line will be taking part in the Winter Classic alumni festitivies on December 31 at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, and Vladimir Konstantinov have all been confirmed to take part. Fedorov, Fetisov and Larionov will play in the game, while Konstantinov, who was paralyzed in a car accident following the team's Stanley Cup win in 1997, is expected to serve as an ambassador.

The Red Wings alumni will be taking on the Maple Leafs alumni the day before their current rosters face off at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, and it was already announced that Scotty Bowman (Red Wings) and Pat Quinn (Maple Leafs) will be coaching in the game.

At this point the only member of the Russian Five that has not committed to taking part is Slava Kozlov. As of this past season Kozlov was still playing in the KHL, having scored eight goals in 44 games for the Moscow Dynamo. Assuming he returns to play for another year, he obviously won't be available for the alumni game.

While playing for Bowman in the mid-90s, the group was the first five-man Russian unit to play on the ice together in an NHL game. They were one of the most dominant lines in the league during that time (you couldn't get the puck away from them) helping lead the Red Wings to their first Stanley Cup in 55 years.
