Report: Alex Pietrangelo to have minor surgery

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer

St. Louis Blues defense Alex Pietrangelo is expected to undergo minor surgery for a "lower body injury" according to a report from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Pietrangelo is expected to be ready for training camp in late September (assuming it starts on time) so the surgery shouldn't force him to miss any action.

The 22-year-old is coming off his best season in the NHL scoring 12 goals to go with 39 assists as the Blues No. 1 defenseman along the blue line. He played in every situation and was trusted with some of the toughest minutes on the team. It was a performance that earned him a fourth place finish in Norris Trophy voting. He should continue to be a regular in that discussion for that award for years to come.

His primary defensive partner from last season, Carlo Colaiacovo, is an unrestricted free agent so he will very likely be playing next to a new partner during the 2012-13 season.

Pietrangelo was injured in the second round of the Western Conference Playoffs -- where the Blues were swept by Los Angeles -- when he was hit from behind by Los Angeles Kings forward Dwight King in Game 1. The knee injury he suffered kept Pietrangelo out of the Blues Game 2 loss, but he was able to return for the final two games of the series.
