John Madden started his NHL career signing with the New Jersey Devilsas an undrafted free agent after playing four years at the NCAA level. And now he'll be responsible for helping to find players who will follow his path to the NHL.

Madden, one of the best defensive forwards of his era, has joined the Montreal Canadiensfront office as part of their "player recruitment group," the team announced on Tuesday. It's a role that will have him scouting and evaluating free-agent players at the NCAA level.

Madden spent the 2011-12 season with the Florida Panthers, his last season in the NHL, appearing in 31 games and scoring three goals after signing with the team in early January. He appeared in 898 games during his NHL career.

He is best known for his many seasons as a member of the Devils, where he was a constant on their penalty kill and arguably the best defensive forward in the league. He won the Selke Trophy during the 2000-01 season and was nominated for the award on two other occa'sions.

Madden joined the NHL during the 1998-99 season and scored 165 goals in the NHL, including 18 shorthanded goals. Only 10 other players in the league were able to top that shorthanded total over that stretch.

He also won three Stanley Cups as a player, including two with the Devils and one as a member of the Chicago Blackhawksduring the 2009-10 season.
