Steve Eminger signs one-year deal with Rangers

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer

The New York Rangers announced Monday afternoon they have agreed to terms with veteran defenseman Steve Eminger on a one-year contract. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Eminger, 29, was an unrestricted free agent this summer and spent the past two seasons with the Rangers, appearing in 107 games during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns. New York is his sixth stop in a career that began with Washington in 2002-03.

In 42 games this past season, he scored two goals to go with three assists. He averaged more than 13 minutes of ice time per game and blocked 53 shots. During his first year with the club, he finished third on the team with 103 blocks.

With Eminger signed, the Rangers have seven defensemen under contract at the NHL level. He joins Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Michael Sauer, Anton Stralman, Stu Bickel and Marc Staal.

Michael Del Zotto, a restricted free agent, remains unsigned. General manager Glen Sather said over the weekend that eventually the 22-year-old Del Zotto will "come to his senses" when it comes to the offer the team has on the table for him.
