Photo: Jonathan Quick has a new retro mask for battle

A first look at Quick's new retro mask. (EyeCandyAir.com)

This time of year should be spent introducing new goalie masks instead of wondering when the NHL will play again. But that's what we're relegated to. So, darn, that's exactly what we're going to do (introduce masks, that is).

Jonathan Quick who, in this writer's weightless opinion, should have won the Vezina Trophy last season and who did win the Conn Smythe in leading the Los Angeles Kings to their first Stanley Cup, has a new cage lined up for retro nights in L.A.

The new design pays homage to the old Kings design -- not the old one from the Wayne Gretzky days, but the old, old ones from the Marcel Dionne days.

It's bold in appearance yet seems pretty basic in design. I really like the understated touch of the back panel that just features the old Kings crown logo. The one thing that slightly throws me off is that it appears it's supposed to be reminiscent of a knight's helmet, but there weren't too many kings who were throwing on the helmet and going into battle.

But that's what Quick will be doing with the new mask, so I guess it works.

The first battle that Quick picked? Why, with every player's top adversary at the moment, Gary Bettman. At least that's what I'm left to infer from Quick's tweet to introduce the mask, wondering where/when he'll actually get to sport it.
