The NHL and NHLPA aren't meeting on Wednesday, but we will still be getting a major announcement on something.
The New York Islanders announced that they will be making a major announcement (their words) with the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at 1 p.m. ET.
The list of people attending is an impressive one and includes Islanders owner Charles Wang, Barclays Center majority owner and developer Bruce Ratner, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, commissioner Gary Bettman, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Islanders general manager Garth Snow and Barclays Center and Brooklyn Nets CEO Brett Yormark.
Adding to the intrigue is this tweet from Islanders beat writer Arthur Staple:
That last RT from the #Isles is not an overblown PR stunt from what I've heard... Trying to find out more. This could very well be major.— Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) October 24, 2012
The Islanders have been trying to secure a new arena for years to replace the Nassau Coliseum with little success. Brooklyn has been mentioned as a possible destination in the past, while Ratner said in August he was "trying like hell" to get the Islanders to move to the Barclays Center.
