NHL lockout: Players-owners meeting will take place Tuesday

By Adam Gretz | Hockey writer

The anticipated meeting involving only players and owners that has been talked about in recent days will take place on Tuesday, as announced by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

"We have confirmed with the Union that we will attempt to schedule a Players/Owners-only meeting for some time on Tuesday afternoon in New York," said Daly in a statement. No further details have been confirmed at this point. We expect the following NHL Owners to attend: Ron Burkle (Pittsburgh Penguins), Mark Chipman (Winnipeg Jets), Murray Edwards (Calgary Flames), Jeremy Jacobs (Boston Bruins), Larry Tanenbaum (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Jeff Vinik (Tampa Bay Lightning). We will provide further details when available and as appropriate."

The idea of a meeting involving only players and owners was presented by the NHL following last week's talks with federal mediators that produced little or no progress.

The inclusion of Jacobs in the meeting probably doesn't provide much optimism for any progress to be made, but there are new owners that will be involved.

Several players have voiced their displeasure with Jacobs' role in the negotiatons. Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Ladd said on Friday that if Jacobs is in there allowed to "spew his stuff," it might not lead to any progress.

“The NHLPA has agreed to a meeting on Tuesday in New York that should facilitate dialogue between Players and Owners," said NHLPA leader Donald Fehr in a statement. "Neither the Commissioner nor I will be present, although each side will have a limited number of staff or counsel present. There will be Owners attending this meeting who have not previously done so, which is encouraging and which we welcome. We hope that this meeting will be constructive and lead to a dialogue that will help us find a way to reach an agreement.”
