MapleLeafsThe Toronto Maple Leafs are in need of a new president after the firing of Brian Burke earlier this month, and a rather interesting -- and very familiar -- name surfaced in the discussion on Tuesday night.

The Maple Leafs ownership has reportedly had internal discussions about the possibility of Wayne Gretzky being their next team president.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos and TSN's Bob McKenzie both mentioned on Twitter that internal talks by MLSE may have taken place, but also added that no formal negotiations or contact between the two sides have actually started.

So in other words it's all still rumor/preliminary discussion at this point. And it should be taken as such. Still, McKenzie added that the Maple Leafs presidency would be one of the few jobs in hockey that Gretzky would consider. And any time Wayne Gretzky and the Toronto Maple Leafs are mentioned, especially in the same sentence, it's going to get some attention.

It also probably seems like a good idea to anybody who forgot about Gretzky's tenure in the Phoenix Coyotes front office (in case you forgot, it didn't go well).

As we've seen with Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, and even Gretzky himself, just because a person was a great player doesn't mean they're destined for the same greatness in the board room. Just look no further than Gretzky's tenure in the Phoenix front office (he was a minority owner of the Coyotes before becoming a majority owner and eventually the coach), which was by all accounts a complete disaster.
