Phil Kessel still has the worst luck this season

At some point over the summer, Toronto 's Phil Kessel had to have broken a mirror, while walking under a ladder, that just happened to be positioned directly in front of a black cat.

His goal-less streak to start the 2013 season reached eight games on Saturday night during a 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, and as has been the case all year it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort or poor play. He was actually really good on Saturday (again) and generated at least three quality scoring chances for the Leafs.

Two of his shots came from within 15 feet of the net, including a bomb of a slap shot from just inside the faceoff dot on the left circle. Another quick wrist shot on the rush rang off the crossbar behind Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, something that's happened to him on more than one occassion over the past few games.

First, the shot that hit the post at the 6:17 mark of the secod period after he picked off a Boston pass in stride coming through the neutral zone.

Just a few minutes later Kessel was positioned directly in front of the net and was set up for a quick snap shot only to have Rask somehow react just in time to turn aside his one-timer.

After Saturday's game ended, no player in the NHL had more shots on goal than Kessel, averaging more than 4.5 per game.

There have been 16 players to record at least 30 shots this season and Kessel is the only one that has yet to score a goal. The other 15 players have an average of four. It's almost impossible and takes a ridiculous amount of bad luck for a player with Kessel's ability to go 30 shots without scoring a goal.

As I wrote last week, if you're looking at the fact he has no goals and automatically assuming he's not playing well or should be doing more, you're simply off the mark.

Because it's not even close to the truth.
