Video: Watch Taylor Hall's anticlimactic overtime penalty shot

By Chris Peters | Hockey Writer

The overtime penalty shot might be one of the rarest occurrences in hockey. Taylor Hall was awarded one Monday night in Edmonton.

After the Vancouver Canucks tied the game late in the third period to force extra time, the Oilers were buzzing.

Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall broke down the ice. After a perfect feed from Eberle, Hall streaked toward the net, but got hooked up by Daniel Sedin. The referee wasted no time to point to the center dot.

Nothing says high drama like a penalty shot in overtime. Taylor Hall vs. Roberto Luongo, one- on-one.

The Rexall Place was buzzing. The bright young star of the Oilers had the game on his stick. As Hall approached the puck, tension built. As he picked up speed, the crowd grew louder. Then with a flick of the wrists, the puck was away.

Then … silence.

Luongo barely moved as the puck glanced harmlessly off his stick and into the corner. Luongo might have blinked, maybe yawned. It's a little hard to tell with the mask on. Either way, he kind of just stood there.

About two minutes later, Daniel Sedin, the man who hooked Hall to draw the penalty shot, sent a perfect pass to Chris Tanev who rifled the puck into the top left corner giving the Canucks the overtime victory.

Oh yeah, and there was a guy with a horse mask at the game for some reason.
