The NHL Daily Fix is your morning wakeup call with news and notes for the day's hockey action.

Morning Buzz

It might have come in a losing effort, but that's one heck of a save by Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov. How he managed to keep that puck from crossing the line is beyond me.

Speaking of those Avs, they were shut out on home ice by the Ducks and Matt Duchene wasn't holding much back.

"It's painful right now," Avs center Matt Duchene said. "It's the same story every night. We're playing well 5-on-5, but we can't seem to find a win in those games. We've got to figure out a way to score a goal. It's the bottom line. We've been shut out three times in 10 games. That's unacceptable. That's almost 50 percent of the games we're getting shut out in. That's a joke. We've got to figure it out here. We've got to bear down more in practice and try to make a few more plays every now and then. We're just knifing the puck in all the time instead of trying to get inside and score a goal." (Denver Post)

And now speaking of those Ducks, they made a minor trade on Wednesday, acquiring defenseman Ben Lovejoy from the Pittsburgh Penguins in return for a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft. Or in other words, two bags of pucks. (Anaheim Ducks)

How bad is it getting for the Washington Capitals at 2-7-1 to start the season? Jay Beagle is talking about sacrificing a live cow. I wonder if he'd accept a bag full of burger the way Pedro Cerrano took a bucket of chicken? (Washington Times)

Some updated odds on the big postseason awards. Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos are the Hart leaders, Lundqvist still atop the Vezina and Joel Quenneville and Todd McLellan for the Jack Adams. Bruce Boudreau might be a steal at 5-1. (Kuklas Korner)
