The Calgary Flames claimed Joey MacDonald off of waivers Monday to try to help out a thin and injured goaltending stable.

MacDonald, who saw some time with the Red Wings last season, was waived by the team on Sunday with the intention of sending him down to AHL Grand Rapids. With Jimmy Howard the clear No. 1 and No. 2 Jonas Gustavsson coming back to health, MacDonald didn't fit with the Wings' big club.

But he can help things in Calgary.

Like usual, the Flames have been relying on Miikka Kiprusoff almost every game. The unusual part is that he hasn't been very good, and earlier this week when he suffered a ding that left him day-to-day, the perilously thin depth of the Flames' goaltending became more clear. There just wasn't much behind Kipper, especially with Leland Irving injured.

The 33-year-old MacDonald won't be mistaken for the next franchise goalie or anything like that. He provides them some depth, particularly necessary in a short season like this.

In 101 career NHL games he has a .903 save percentage and 3.04 goals against average but in the past two seasons in Detroit he has put up strong numbers. In 14 games last season he had a 2.16 GAA and .912 save percentage while winning eight of his 14 starts.
