Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Korbinian Holzer has played in only eight NHL games in his young career. He scored his first two NHL goals earlier this year, and now he might get his first career phone call from Brendan Shanahan.
With about 6:30 to play in the second period between the Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers, Holzer pushed Tye McGinn in the back, sending McGinn face-first into the boards. Holzer received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.
McGinn went straight to the Flyers dressing room. He sat out the rest of the second period but returned to the ice in the third.
This seems like a pretty clear instance of a reckless hit, and it appears the referees made the correct call on the ice. McGinn's body position did not significantly change before the hit, and Holzer got his arms extended into McGinn's back. The result was pretty ugly.
There is a chance Shanahan will view the on-ice punishment as significant enough, but this is likely to get an extra look from the league.
