Monday was just not a good day for the New York Islanders.

In their Presidents Day matinee against the Flyers on their home ice, the Islanders were embarrassed. They were run out of the building by a Philly team that was just 2-8 on the road coming in, losing 7-0. It was the worst shutout defeat in franchise history.

But that wasn't all. They also lost defenseman Brian Strait to a broken ankle. He's going to be out the next six-to-eight weeks, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.

In the second period, Strait was chasing the puck near the boards in the neutral zone when he lost an edge close to the bench and went flying feet first into the boards. He crawled back to the bench in obvious pain.

After the game, coach Jack Capuano would only say "he's going to be out a while," but Staple said Strait's season might be over.

It's certainly not good news for the Islanders. They signed Strait off waivers just before the season began, and he has been a nice surprise, providing a steady presence on the blue line. The Plus/Minus stat is hardly perfect, but the fact that he is the only Islanders player with a positive in that margin (plus-3) should tell you something.

He was such a pleasant surprise that the Islanders gave Strait a three-year contract extension worth $2.325 million last month.

Seems like this is just another season for the Isles. C'est la vie.
