When not tending the nets for the Philadelphia Flyers, it seems Ilya Bryzgalov spends a lot of his time thinking about big-picture things outside of hockey or perhaps more accurately, humongous big-picture things.

Bryzgalov is well known for his thoughts on the universe (above) and his brief stint as a cosmonaut. Also, if you didn't know, he's Russian. So that makes him just about the perfect person for a Philadelphia sports talk radio station to ask about last week's stunning meteor strike near Chelyabinsk, Russia.

In an interview with WIP, Bryzgalov shared his unique insight.

"Probably every day, our atmosphere was penetrated with the smaller size of the meteors, and (they) just burned high in the atmosphere. This is a much bigger size, but that big that struck the earth like … back in the days, like when the dinosaurs was destroyed. On one thing it's very interesting. On the other hand, it's dangerous. And you know we can't protect ourselves from the space danger."

"I think we've gotta like be thankful, and be happy, and enjoy every day our life with our relatives, our wives, kids, and enjoy our work every day."

Those are some deep thoughts from a deep man and good advice, too.

Perhaps it was the imminent space danger on Bryzgalov's mind Thursday night when he gave up four goals on 15 shots in 31:46 of action against the Florida Panthers. Who could blame him, really? Did Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck teach us nothing?

We may not be able to protect ourselves from space danger, but we can at least be prepared. Thanks for this important message, Bryz.
