The NHL Daily Fix is your morning wakeup call, with news and notes for the day's hockey action.

Morning buzz

Everybody always wants explanations from Brendan Shanahan on nonsuspensions. While the above video isn't exactly perfect, it's a really interesting breakdown to see how the league rules on goalie interference in the supplemental discipline process. Very thorough.

Who is the premier shootout specialist in the NHL? Forget Pavel Datsyuk, Todd Bertuzzi or Patrick Kane, it's Frans Nielsen of the Islanders (although Jonathan Huberdeau could join the conversation soon, wow). Now if he could just get that scoring at 5-on-5 thing down ... (Wall Street Journal)

Alex Ovechkin had a huge game Saturday with a hat trick. His fiancee and tennis player Maria Kirilenko was in the stands. Coincidence? Probably not. Or maybe. I don't know. (Russian Machine Never Breaks)

The Dallas Stars have actually done alright without him, but they have to be encouraged by the news that Kari Lehtonen is just about ready to return. (Dallas Morning News)

Ilya Bryzgalov is now Mr. Universe. Or just drop the Mr.; he is The Universe. That's what Siri says, anyway. (Philly.com)

Contract corner: The Coyotes extended David Schlemko for two years. They're one of the many teams that doesn't release the money info. (Coyotes)

The Red Wings locked up Brian Lashoff for three seasons. Again, the team did not release the money details. (Kuklas Korner)

The Penguins signed Mark Eaton to a one-year deal. The Pens are one of those great teams that does release the money particulars. The deal pays him $725,000 for the one season (prorated, naturally). (Penguins)

• Lastly, the Senators organist rules. They played the theme to The Simpsons as the players headed to the dressing room after the first period on Monday night. Well done. (The Big Lead)
