The play came in the second period when Ward reached out for a shot from the point and immediately went down to the ice in a heap as the shot flew by wide. Play was stopped immediately and Ward was helped off the ice, not looking to be in good shape at all.
It resulted in Dan Ellis having to enter the game despite being ill.
It would be a big blow for the Canes because after a slow start, Ward was starting to play much better as Carolina moved into first in the Southeast. He's been a fixture in the Carolina net for years now.
Not to play amateur doctor too much, but it appeared it could have been a groin injury for Ward, the way he reacted when going down into the butterfly was telling. If so, it would be an interesting coincidence, as Panthers goalie Jose Theodore tore his groin in Saturday's game at Carolina, the first end of a home-and-home for the Southeast rivals.
Or as Luke DeCock mentions, it could also be an ankle issue. Just seconds before Ward went down there was a collision in the crease when Jack Skille was driving hard before losing it and falling into the cage and Ward.
Either way, it didn't look good when Ward was leaving the ice and the Hurricanes will be keeping their fingers crossed he's not out for long. Ellis hasn't been bad behind Ward this season but, you know, it's always good to have the No. 1 goalie healthy.
Ward had a 2.93 goals against average and .905 save percentage coming into Sunday's game with an 8-6-1 record.
