The New Jersey Devils were excited to get Martin Brodeur back from injury on Thursday night against Carolina, mostly because he's probably going to stop more shots than Johan Hedberg did while replacing him.

They probably weren't counting on him to open the scoring.

But that's exactly what he did (sort of) when he was credited with his third career goal (second in the regular season -- he also has one in the playoffs) early in the first period against the Hurricanes.

On a delayed penalty call against New Jersey, Hurricanes goalie Dan Ellis went to the bench for an extra attacker. At that point Hurricanes center Jordan Staal attempted to make a cross-ice pass only to have the puck take an unfortuante bounce off the boards and travel the length of the ice into the empty net for a Devils goal.

Because Brodeur was the last Devils player to touch the puck, he gets credit for the goal. His first of the season.

Just for laughs, entering Thursday's game there were 84 skaters in the NHL who had played at least 14 games this season -- I chose 14 because Thursday was Brodeur's 14th game of the season -- and not scored. Brodeur now has more goals than all of them.
