PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins received a bit of a surprise on Saturday afternoon when they found out Jarome Iginla would be in the lineup.

And then they received a huge scare early in the game, when their captain and the NHL's leading scorer, Sidney Crosby, was hit in the face by a puck, resulting in a large amount of blood on the ice. Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik took a shot from the point that was deflected just in front of Crosby.

Here's a look at the play (gif via Josh Gold-Smith)

He was down for a few minutes before skating off under his own power.

Crosby did not return to the game. The official word from the Penguins is that he took a puck to the mouth.

After the game, coach Dan Bylsma confirmed that Crosby was taken to a hospital for some oral surgery and that he lost a few teeth. When asked if "oral surgery" was related just to Crosby's teeth or if it involved his jaw, Bylsma said that he did not have an answer for that question.
