It appears the Los Angeles Kings could be getting an upgrade to their blue line before the playoffs begin and won't have to make a trade before Wednesday's trade deadline to do it.
Defenseman Matt Greene could be ready to return to the lineup by the end of April, general manager Dean Lombardi told the Los Angeles Times this week.
Greene has appeared in just one game for Los Angeles this season, the opening loss to Chicago, and has been out ever since after undergoing back surgery in January.
He appeared in all 82 games for the Kings last season plus all of their playoff games on the way to their Stanley Cup victory, scoring four goals to go with 11 assists. Perhaps his biggest contribution was on the Kings' penalty kill, where he was one of their top options on the blue line.
Even without Greene for most of the season, the Kings are still a top-10 team in the NHL in terms of goals against and allowing the third-fewest shots per game. Their penalty kill was 13th as of Saturday morning.
