Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman has repeatedly expressed his desire to add center depth for his team, and it appears he did that Monday. Chicago acquired Michal Handzus from the San Jose Sharks for a fourth-round draft pick in 2013, the Blackhawks announced.

Handzus, a 36-year-old center, has appeared in 28 games for the Sharks this season and has posted one goal and one assist. It will be a bit of a return for Handzus as the big forward appeared in eight games for the Blackhawks in 2006-07 before suffering a season-ending injury.

Chicago gets depth, size and experience at the center position with Handzus who has some two-way capabilities. The Blackhawks have been primarily using Andrew Shaw and Marcus Kruger at center on its bottom two lines for much of the season.

Handzus has appeared in 939 games and registered 461 points over his NHL career.

This may not be the splash Chicago fans were hoping for, but with the team sporting one of the best records in the NHL, shoring up depth is a more sensible move. Handzus doesn't cost the Blackhawks any of its solid young players or anything from its deep prospect pool, so that's also a plus with the deal.

The Sharks meanwhile continue selling off the scraps as the team falls further from contention. General manager Doug Wilson has been looking to deal and Ryane Clowe could be next, with several teams rumored to be in the mix to acquire Clowe's services.
