The Winnipeg Jets announced Tuesday night that they have agreed to terms with 2012 first-round draft pick Jacob Trouba.

Trouba, who is coming off an impressive season at the University of Michigan, was the No. 9 overall selection in the June draft and scored 12 goals to go with 17 assists in 37 games for the Wolverines.

The question now becomes whether or not the Jets will decide to use him in their lineup this season and perhaps even burn the first year of his entry-level contract. If he plays more than five games he will have used up the first year of that deal.

He has a ton of talent and could make an impact on the roster for a Jets team that's currently in first place in the Southeast Division. The franchise, dating back to its days in Atlanta, has only made the playoffs one time, a brief trip in 2006-07 when it was swept by the New York Rangers in the first round.

Trouba is by nearly all accounts NHL ready, and not only could he help the team due to his own ability, but might even allow the Jets to make another move with one of their current defensemen by Wednesday's deadline (like, for example, veteran Ron Hainsey). It will be an interesting situation to watch unfold over the final month of the season to see how the Jets handle it.

They may not throw him into the lineup yet, but instead give him a few practices and see how he handles his first taste of NHL action later in the year to see if he can help them enough to use up the first year of his ELC.
