The Minnesota Wild made a big splash in free agency, and now they've made a big splash on trade deadline day.

The Wild have acquired forward Jason Pominville from the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday afternoon, less than an hour before the trade deadline, in exchange for prospects Matthew Hackett and Johan Larsson, Minnesota's 2013 first-round draft pick, and a 2014 second-round draft pick.

It's a bold move for Minnesota, a team in contention for the Northwest Division title, and gives the Wild another top-line player. Pominville has 10 goals and 15 assists in 37 games this season and is coming off a 30-goal performance a year ago for the Sabres.

The Sabres are out of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference and have been selling off players in recent days, previously dealing defensemen Robyn Regehr and Jordan Leopold.

In return for their captain, the Sabres received Hackett, a goaltender, who could be an option to replace Ryan Miller sometime down the line whenever he moves on. Larson was Minnesota's second-round pick in 2010. He had 37 points in 65 games for the Houston Aeros of the AHL this season.

Pominville has one year remaining on his contract that pays him $5.5 million per season.
